Description

Comprising just two ingredients—vodka (or gin) and grapefruit juice—the Greyhound is a classic cocktail that offers a crisp, refreshing taste that’s both tart and slightly bitter.

Since the 1930s, the Greyhound cocktail’s straightforward preparation and clean flavour profile have made it a popular choice for weary travellers making their way across the US by coach.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz or 60 ml Vodka or Gin
  • 4 oz or 120 ml Fresh grapefruit juice
  • Sugar Syrup (optional)
  • Ice cubes
  • Grapefruit slice or twist (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prep: Fill a highball glass with ice cubes.
  2. Pour: Add the vodka or gin over the ice and top with fresh grapefruit juice.
  3. Mix: Stir gently to mix.
  4. Garnish: A slice or twist of grapefruit.

Notes

The Greyhound cocktail is believed to have originated in the United States in the 1930s and gained popularity after World War II.

Its name is inspired by the famous bus line, as it was a popular drink at Greyhound bus terminals where it was said local restaurant chains served it.
