Description

The Zombie is a potent and complex tiki cocktail that has captivated drinkers with its exotic blend of flavours and formidable strength since its creation in the late 1930s.

Made with a combination of light and dark rums, apricot brandy, and a mix of citrus and pineapple juices, the Zombie is surely a test of one’s grit.

Its vibrant layers and tropical taste make it a standout cocktail, embodying the spirit of tiki culture with its elaborate presentation and rich history.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 oz or 30 ml Light rum
  • 1 oz or 30 ml Dark rum
  • 1/2 oz or 15 ml Apricot brandy
  • 1 oz or 30 ml Lime juice
  • 1 oz or 30 ml Pineapple juice
  • 1/2 oz or 15 ml Grenadine
  • Dash of Angostura bitters
  • Crushed ice
  • Mint sprig (for garnish)
  • Pineapple slice (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prep: In a blender, combine all the ingredients (aside from the garnish) with a cup of crushed ice.
  2. Combine: Blend until smooth.
  3. Finish: Pour into a tall glass or a tiki mug.
  4. Garnish: A sprig of mint and a slice of pineapple.

Notes

The Zombie cocktail was created by Don the Beachcomber, a legendary figure in the tiki bar scene, and was designed to be so strong that customers were limited to two drinks.

Its name is said to have been inspired by a friend of Don’s who, after consuming the cocktail, felt like a “zombie.” The drink quickly became a symbol of tiki culture, known for its elaborate and theatrical cocktails that transport drinkers to a tropical paradise.
