The Last Word

  • Author: Ingrid Visockiene
  • Total Time: 2 minutes
  • Yield: 1 Serving 1x

Description

Originally served at the Detroit Athletic Club in the early 20th century, the Last Word is a Prohibition-era cocktail with attitude due to its bright green and herbaceous flavour.

This vibrant concoction uses equal parts gin, green Chartreuse, maraschino liqueur, and fresh lime juice for a complex, sweet, sour, and potent combo.

My Last Word cocktail recipe is a teeny-weeny bit stronger than others you may come across. You can thank me later.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 oz or 30 ml London Dry Gin
  • 1 oz or 30 ml Green Chartreuse
  • 1 oz or 30 ml Maraschino liqueur
  • 1 oz or 30 ml Fresh lime juice
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

  1. Prep: Fill a shaker with ice cubes.
  2. Combine: Add the gin, green Chartreuse, maraschino liqueur, and fresh lime juice.
  3. Mix: Shake well until the mixture is thoroughly chilled.
  4. Pour: Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  5. Garnish: Maraschino cherry (optional)

Notes

For me, the Last Word is all about balance, where no single ingredient dominates the others. The cocktail’s name, the Last Word, suggests its definitive nature - a drink so perfectly composed that it has the final say in any cocktail debate.
