Said to have originated in the iconic Manhattan Club in New York City, the best Manhattan cocktail recipe combines rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and Angostura bitters.
If you prefer your Manhattan cocktail a little sweeter, substitute rye whiskey’s smoky/spicy profile for a smooth bourbon or blended Canadian whisky.
Ingredients
- 2 oz or 60 ml of rye whiskey
- 1 oz or 30 ml of sweet vermouth
- 1–2 dashes of Angostura bitters
- Ice cubes
- Garnish: Brandied cherry
Instructions
- Combine: Add whiskey, vermouth and bitters into a shaker glass.
- Mixer: Add ice cubes and gently stir. Do not shake! Strain cooled cocktail into a chilled glass.
- Garnish: Pop a brandied cherry on a cocktail stick and place it on top of the glass, then serve.
Notes
For the ultimate well-balanced Manhattan, use ½ oz (15ml) sweet vermouth and ½ oz (15ml) dry vermouth.
