Description

The French 75, with its elegant fusion of quality gin, fresh lemon juice, champagne, and a touch of sugar, is a timeless cocktail that epitomises sophistication.

Originating from World War I, France, this concoction got its name after the French 75mm field gun, symbolising this gin cocktail’s formidable impact.

I first sampled the delights of the French 75 several years ago whilst working in Nice, France, and have been a fan of its harmonious effervescence ever since.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz or 60 ml of London Dry Gin
  • 1/2 oz or 15 ml of fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz or 15 ml of simple syrup
  • Champagne or sparkling wine
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon twist for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prep: Combine gin, lemon juice, and sugar syrup with ice in a shaker.
  2. Mix: Shake well until the outside of the shaker feels cold.
  3. Pour: Strain into a champagne flute and top with champagne.
  4. Stir: Gently stir to combine.
  5. Garnish: Complete with a lemon twist.

Notes

The choice of gin can significantly influence the taste of your French 75, and trying different gins allows you to personalise this classic drink.

A classic London Dry Gin adds a crisp, juniper-forward flavour with a touch of citrus, while an Old Tom Gin will create a sweeter, more nuanced cocktail.
