Caipirinha

  • Author: Andrew Radford
  • Total Time: 2 minutes
  • Yield: 1 Serving 1x

Description

Famed for being Brazil’s national cocktail, the Caipirinha is celebrated for its simple yet captivating combination of cachaça, lime, and sugar.

Whether enjoyed on the beaches of Rio or at home, the Caipirinha offers your tastebuds equal measures of citrus, sweetness and tart.

The Caipirinha’s rustic preparation, which involves muddling whole lime wedges with sugar, makes it aromatic, flavourful and visually appealing, too!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz or 60 ml Cachaça
  • 1 Lime (cut into wedges)
  • 2 tsp Sugar
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

  1. Prep: In a rocks glass, muddle the lime wedges and sugar together until the sugar is dissolved and the lime releases its juice.
  2. Ice: Fill the glass with ice cubes.
  3. Pour: Pour the cachaça over the ice and stir.
  4. Garnish: A lime wedge if desired.

Notes

The Caipirinha’s name derives from “caipira,” a term referring to rural folk in Brazil, emphasising the cocktail’s origins as a rustic, countryside drink.

While traditionally made with cachaça, variations of the Caipirinha replace cachaça with vodka (Caipiroska), rum (Caipirissima), or gin (Caipirinha de Gin).
