Description
The Bramble is a classic gin cocktail with a nod to the English countryside. It combines sweet and tart flavours with the visual appeal of crushed ice and blackberry.
Created in the 1980s by legendary bartender Dick Bradsell, the Bramble features gin, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and, not forgetting, blackberry fruit liqueur.

- 1 oz or 30 ml Fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 oz or 15 ml Simple syrup
- 1/2 oz or 15 ml Blackberry liqueur (such as Crème de Mûre)
- Crushed ice
- Fresh blackberries (for garnish)
- Lemon slice (for garnish)
Instructions
- Prep: Fill a rocks glass with crushed ice.
- Shake: In a shaker, combine gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup with ice and shake until well chilled.
- Pour: Strain the mixture over the crushed ice in the glass.
- Finish: Drizzle blackberry liqueur over the top to create a marbling effect.
- Garnish: Fresh blackberries and a slice of lemon.
Notes
This cocktail’s name, “Bramble,” refers to the thorny, bushy plants where blackberries grow, highlighting the drink’s deep connection to its British roots.
The use of crushed ice not only chills the drink but also slowly dilutes the mixture, helping to balance the strong flavours of the gin and the tartness of the lemon juice with the sweet depth of the blackberry liqueur.
